Benefits of Using a Muzzle On Your Dog

  • Travelling dogs may require muzzling. In many countries and some states in America, certain breeds or sized dogs must be muzzled at all times in public.
  • Use during veterinary procedures (link to vet clinic post). Muzzles are great tools that protect veterinary workers while they examine and treat your pet, enable them to perform more thorough examinations, and reduce the need for sedation.
  • Use in emergency situations. When in pain your usually non-aggressive dog may bite out of pain or fear. This is a completely natural response to fear. Muzzles are a great tool that enables safe examination and transport of your pet. By already having positive associations for your dog with their muzzle you are able to avoid adding another stressor to an already stressful situation.
  • Use during behavior modification or during desensitization training with other dogs or species. Under the direct supervision or direction of training expert muzzles can be an incredible tool. Muzzles allow your pet to reap the rewards of the training while reducing the risk of biting.

Keep in mind, muzzles should not be used to prevent problem behavior such as barking. Instead, address the underlying cause of this unwanted behavior.

There are 3 main things to keep in mind when choosing a muzzle for your dog.

  • Safety – Is your dog able to breathe and pant to cool themselves?
  • Comfort – Is your dog comfortable?
  • Nutrition – Is your dog able to eat and drink?

Rather than popping the muzzle straight on them let your dog sniff and investigate it. Put the muzzle close to your dog’s face while offering praise and rewards.

  • Regularly check your pet for signs of discomfort while muzzled
  • Ensure the muzzle fits well, with no areas that cause chafing.
  • Inspect the muzzle regularly for signs of wear or damage
