Two Approaches to Stop a Dog From Misbehaving

There are two ways to stop a dog from misbehaving – the right way, and then there’s the not-so-right way. Unfortunately, most dogs owners, by default, choose the not-so-right way.

Do you have a dog that is always misbehaving? One of those dogs driving you crazy; is barking all the time and or is doing something that’s annoying you?

Two Ways to Stop a Dog from Misbehaving

The first approach I don’t suggest you use is some form of discipline that will cause pain or mental depression in your dog. 

Yes, this approach may stop your dog from misbehaving at that moment. But it doesn’t have a long-term result. 

Using pain and physical discomfort to discipline a dog for behavior problems will not only cause pain in your dog and pain in your heart. It will also cause long-lasting mental and emotional damage to your dog.

But you will see results, I guarantee you, you will see results for the time being, for a very short period you’re going to see results.

Using any form of domination, by force or being alpha, or even using shock collars, prong collars, choke chain collars, anything like that that causes pain or emotional or physical pain in your dog, you will see results right away.

But it doesn’t mean that the behavior is gone. On the contrary, the behavior is still there, and the behavior may even get worse as you continue using those approaches.

How to Correct Dog Behavior Problems

Now the second approach that I suggest you use is positivity, not punishment. Teach your dog how to behave – the behavior you expect from your dog. 

So the first approach was just masking the problem. It’s just dealing with the situation.

The second approach that I suggest you use is training your dog. That means you’re working on your dog. You’re helping your dog. You’re teaching your dog. 

You’re approaching your dog in a way that it will take longer for the dog to learn and for you to see the results, but your dog at least is learning.

Yes, it’s driving you crazy — the barking and whatever else it is that’s getting you so stressed. 

But if you approach it from a training point of view, at least your dog is learning something, and hopefully, eventually, you’re gonna get results.

This approach takes time for you to see results. Then, of course, it takes time for the dog to stop that behavior. But you will see results. 

You haven’t emotionally, mentally, and physically damaged your dog.

Build a Loving and Trusting Relationship

Also, when you use this approach, you’re building a communication system between you and your dog.

You’re building a stronger, healthier relationship with your dog. And you’re gonna see results that are going to be a hundred and eighty or even 360 degrees different than what you have now.

But it will take some time. 

So that’s my two cents worth about how you can stop a dog from misbehaving. 

Two types are very common for dog owners to use. Unfortunately, most dog owners use one more than the other.

How do you discipline a dog that won’t listen?

Some dogs misbehave as a means to grab attention, others will simply test the boundaries. Either way, the best way to stop this behavior is to stop them in the act – sometimes that is easier said than done.

So when you see your dog misbehaving, say NO! and remove them from the scene or take away from them the item that they are in the process of destroying. Then once they have settled, give them a chew toy, something like one of these Benebone Wishbone Durable Dog Chew Toys from Amazon

There is no point in disciplining your dog for chewing on the couch while you were at work. For example, they greet you with enthusiasm at the door when you got home, and the next thing they are being growled at. WTF? S/he won’t have a clue what they have done wrong.
